Oudtshoorn community loses a diamond by Garnett Wicomb

For the benefit of all I translated this article written by Garnett Wicomb that was published in the Hoorn. This is the original link: http://www.oudtshoorninfo.com/hoorn.php?page=hoorn&action=view_hoorn_article&id=3767

The love of a young man for his dogs led to his death when his vehicle left the road and overturned on Saturday evening near the Calitzdorp Spa.

The 30-year-Gerthwin Lekay, commonly known as Guss, an only child of Mr. Godfrey and Ms. Sandra Lekay, was on his way home to take care of his three dogs when the accident happened about five kilometers from the resort. It is believed that he lost control of the bakkie on a sharp bend.

He had spent Saturday afternoon at the resort where his parents attended the Wicomb family reunion. It was also his mother's birthday. "He did not stay over because he had to take care of dogs," his grieving mother said on Tuesday. The accident happened on the same bend where last weekend a minibus left the road, overturned and one person was killed.

Gerthwin Lekay was a civil engineer at the Oudtshoorn Municipality and project manager of the council's job creation projects. On Tuesday morning during a visit to the grieving parents, the municipal manager, Mr Noël Pietersen, expressed his condolences to the family on behalf of the municipality. “The municipality and the community has lost a diamond. We had great things in the pipeline for him. He was always the same, with a broad smile.” Pietersen said.
