The first Wicomb arrived in South Africa from England in the early 1700's. He was a ship's doctor and disembarked at Knysna. He had twins(boys) with a woman from Java, probably a slave. She also had children from two other men with the surnames of Barnard & Rensburg. She is therefore the ancestress of the Wicombs, the Barnards & the Rensburgs.
One of the twins died as a baby and the other kept the surname of his father (Wicomb). The first Robert Wicomb, probably a son or grandson of the twins, married Netta Kruitzenberg. Their son, Robert (1818 - 1905) married Bella Le Roux (1818 - 1898) and they had eight children. All the present day Wicombs are descendants of the eight children, namely Robert, Simon, Jeanetta, Frederick, Daniel, Moses, Alida & Abraham
